Arrive early or later in the afternoon after or so when people are beginning to leave. There is no shortage of cruises to choose from in Sarasota. It could have something to do with the fact that the boat is adorned with palm trees and mermaids.
This cruise offers cocktails, drinks for the kids and snacks at very reasonable prices. As we cruised along, the girls and I enjoyed checking out the giant waterfront mansions and trying to spot dolphins. Once the sun starts going down, the fun really begins. There are several different areas to visit but our favorite is the Ringling Circus Museum. This 3, square foot display was built by Howard Tibbal over the course of 50 years.

Modeled after the architecture they admired in Venice, this home is opulent from top to bottom. The Ringlings lived a life of luxury and though the house fell into disrepair over the years, it has since been restored to all its original glory. Ringling was also an art collector and built a separate building a museum just to house his collection. You can tour it any day of the week, but if you want to save a little money, Mondays are free. The large museum grounds also features a rose garden, a secret garden, and a pier with water views.
Bring a picnic and relax while the kids play on the playground. You can never go wrong with a trip to the aquarium. Kids will love getting up close and personal with manatees, sharks, sea turtles and other ocean animals at the Mote Marine Laboratory Aquarium.
There were plenty of hands-on activities too. The girls were able to touch stingrays, crabs, and these cute little starfish too. This was a great way to spend the afternoon and it was not only fun, but it was also educational as well. I also learned that my youngest wants a pet otter for Christmas and according to her, otters are perfectly happy living in bathtubs!
This colorful park is the perfect place to spend an afternoon in Sarasota with kids. It has everything a regular park has and more, including a misting area to cool off, clown cars and circus animals. Even older kids have a great time here and there are plenty of shaded benches where parents can sit and relax while the kids run around. When you get thirsty or hungry, head to the cafe next door where they sell drinks, sandwiches, and even popsicles. Visit on the right day and you may even get live music. While the gardens are beautiful on their own, we love all the kid-friendly experiences.
Of course, there are plenty of ziplines too. There a variety of courses based on your skill level. We started off with an easy course and worked our way up.
Sarasota Festivals You Don’t Want to Miss
This was a great bonding experience for my oldest daughter and I kids have to be at least 7 years old. Sarasota gets hot and you can also expect a rainstorm pretty much every afternoon. My girls were fascinated by the old kitchens and I had to explain what looms and spindles were used for. I think their favorite part was what we found behind the house. We met a super friendly pig who apparently loves attention. Back at the pioneer houses, the girls played on an old-fashioned seesaw and learned what it was like to pump water in the olden days.
The Crowley Museum even offers classes for kids such as soap making, canning, plant dyeing and more. TravelingMom Tip : If you visit at the end of the day, be sure to spray on some mosquito repellent. Another one of our favorite things to do in Sarasota is to visit Mixon Fruit Farms.
Take a ride on the Orange Blossom Tram to visit the small wildlife refuge where they treat and rehabilitate rescued birds, animals, and reptiles. If you want to see Florida wildlife up close and personal, take the Myakka Wildlife Tour. Just watch out…if you go in the summer, you may just end up in a rainstorm. You can pretty much expect them every afternoon, if only for a short time. Once your boat tour finishes, you can head to the gift shop for coffee and souvenirs, hop aboard the tram for a land tour or walk one of the nature trails and see what you discover.
Observe manatees and bottlenose dolphins, take a short nature walk on an uninhabited island and see pelicans and other birds in their natural habitats. With so much to do in Sarasota, it makes a great destination for your next family vacation.
